This tour unveils Sri Lanka’s authentic charm through the discovery of three historic, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, starting with the sacred city of Anuradhapura, then Kandy – famous for its Temple of the Tooth – and the must-see fortress of Sigiriya, dating from 5th century AD. Discover the ramparts of Jaffna and meet some of the inhabitants during a friendly lunch. Enjoy the fascinating Sri Lankan flora and fauna in Wasgomuwa. Make sure you visit the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala and wander around the largest botanical gardens in Sri Lanka.

Day 1

Airport - Negombo (Waikkal)

Our local guide will greet you when you arrive at Colombo International Airport and ensure your transfer to the hotel in Waikkal. Once you've unpacked and got some rest, you can get to know this small fishing village.
Dinner and night at the Villa Sunbird (or similar).

Day 2

Negombo - Chilaw - Yapahuwa - Anuradhapura

You will go to Chilaw by sea past several fishing villages. Once in Chilaw you will drive to Yapahuwa, but first you will visit the Munneswaram Hindu temple and the Panduwasnuwara Buddhist Temple. You will then carry on with your journey through several small villages and coconut plantations, giving you the opportunity to interact with the local people. Once in Yapahuwa you will see the rock fortress complex where a temple was erected to house the relic of the Tooth of Buddha, on the initiative of King Bhuvenakabahu. Arrival in Anuradhapura late afternoon.

Day 3

Anuradhapura - Jaffna

Today you will explore the ancient city of Anuradhapura and see the famed Sri Maha Bodi tree, grown from a branch of the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. You will then head north towards Jaffna, and as you approach the city you will stop to see the “secret” Murukandi Hindu Temple. According to tradition you have to put a coin in the offering box. You will then discover Yalpanam (Jaffna in Tamil), the cultural capital of the Tamil people of Sri Lanka. You will visit the old Public Library and the Nallur Temple, a Hindu sanctuary dedicated to the god of war and victory Lord Murugan. Custom dictates that men can only enter bare-chested (pictures are forbidden).

Day 4

Jaffna

Departure for the island of Nainativu after breakfast. You will first drive through Kayts Island and take a closer look at the people's way of life before reaching the Kurikadduwan jetty. From there you will take a boat to discover life on Nainativu, the Nagapooshani Amman Hindu temple and the Nagadipa Buddhist temple. Lunch will take place in a private home, before going back to Jaffna and visiting the city's ramparts, remnants of a Portuguese fort built in the 17thcentury.

Day 5

Jaffna - Sigiriya - Habarana

You will first visit a fishing net factory, where nearly 50 war widows make the best fishing nets on the whole island. You will then go to Sigiriya and stop for lunch in a local restaurant near Anuradhapura. You will then make the ascent of the famed Lion Rock in Sigiriya and visit the fortress at the top (a World Heritage Site).

Day 6

Habarana - Thabale - Wasgamowa

Enjoy a beautiful morning drive to Wasgamuwa to admire the picturesque scenery of verdant rice paddies. You will then stop on the shores of Thabale Lake, covered with lotus flowers. After visiting a rice factory and its husking mills, you will reach the hotel and enjoy some free time to try the swimming pool. In the afternoon, you will go on safari in Wasgamuwa National Park.

Day 7

Wasgamowa - Kandy

You will pass through many traditional villages on your way to Kandy. Discover the charm of this historic city, renowned for the Temple of the Tooth. The temple and the shrines dedicated to the four deities protecting the Tooth Relic form a monumental ensemble classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Here you will have the opportunity to watch traditional dancing and fire walking. An impressive religious ceremony will take place at the Temple of the Tooth in the evening.

Day 8

Kandy - Pinnawela - Peradeniya - Kandy

You will go to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to see the baby elephants as they get fed and watch the whole herd enjoy a bath in the river. For your next visit you will head for Peradeniya to see the Royal Botanic Gardens, located only 5 km from Kandy. A former royal park, these gardens spread over 60 hectares and are now the largest of their kind in Sri Lanka. They are renowned for their orchid collection and superb avenue of palms. The giant Java fig tree is also one of the highlights.

Day 9

Kandy - Nuwara Eliya

After breakfast you will drive to Nuwara Eliya. The road you'll take is lined with vast tea plantations. You will make several stops to meet the local people and especially to discover the various activities linked to tea production. You will have the opportunity to visit a tea factory and taste delicious teas. After lunch you'll go for a stroll around Nuwara Eliya's town centre and park.

Day 10

Nuwara Eliya - Bandarawela - Ella

You will go to Nanu Oya train station in a tuk-tuk after breakfast. A beautiful small train journey awaits, meandering across the tea-growing hills. You'll be able to see waterfalls and enjoy an exceptional experience with your fellow passengers. Once in Haputale, you will resume your trip by road until the lovely mountain village of Ella.
